Ridgeline Protection Ordinance
The Ridgeline Protection Ordinance has been prepared in response to Council instruction (CF 11-1441-S1) in order to better protect and preserve the City’s ridgelines, or the natural crests of the mountains that surround and bisect Los Angeles. The proposed ordinance establishes a new Supplemental Use District (SUD) with two levels of protection that are available to be applied to ridgeline or ridgeline adjacent properties. This week, the draft of the Ridgeline Protection Ordinance has been released for public review and comment. Please note that this ordinance establishes the regulations contained in the Ridgeline Protection SUD but does not propose the application of the SUD anywhere. The next step in this ordinance process will be to hold a staff-level public hearing, where members of the public can learn more about the proposed ordinance and submit official testimony to the case file to further inform the ordinance. LA River Master Plan Comment Portal
The comment window for the LARMPU is open until May 13th, but NOW is the time to send in a letter of concern about it’s scope and priorities. The online comment portal is live and active, making it easy for you to join the hundreds of advocates who have sent in a comment letter directly to Public Works. At this stage, this is the best shot at registering issues with the Plan and upholding values for what the River can and should be.
Department of Cannabis Regulation (DCR) Launches SPARK!
The Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation (DCR) is dedicated to engaging with community members to better serve them and meet their needs. DCR needs your help to better advise the City of Los Angeles on cannabis laws, policies and programs! Throughout the next few months, DCR will be engaging with members of the community through an interactive and informative citywide outreach campaign — SPARK — which is launching this week! SPARK is a multifaceted program that allows community members to engage with DCR through a variety of methods, including virtual events, written feedback, surveys and other resources.

Observing Transportation Trends: Results of the LADOT Walk & Bike Count
LADOT has published findings and data from its inaugural study counting the number of people biking and walking on Los Angeles streets. The count, which took place over several weekends in 2019, reveals trends in active transportation while observing the demographics of Angelenos traveling through the city. Observations show a significant increase in the number of people walking and biking in locations where LADOT has made safety and complete street improvements. While women make up only 16% of people biking, there is a 120% increase in female riders on streets with dedicated bike paths.
This report examines how transportation investments can create streets that feel safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities. Information gathered during the count will be used to guide future pedestrian and bike infrastructure projects throughout the city. The data provided in the report serve the following purposes:
- Identify locations for future bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
- Understand how travel trends and behaviors vary across geographic areas and street typologies.
- Track usage before and after transportation projects and programs are implemented.
LADOT’s Walk & Bike Count was one of the first large scale tests of SCAG’s recently launched Active Transportation Database, which provides ways for agencies to collect and store data for public use. Data from the report will also be available on city websites such as NavigateLA and at Los Angeles Open Data.
Get Ready for Tax Day
With Tax Day less than a month away, L.A. Controller Ron Galperin seeks to reduce the stress of meeting the May 17 filing deadline by offering low- to moderate-income Angelenos a new, interactive map of free tax preparation service providers throughout the area. The map lists 55 tax prep assistance locations that include local community-based organizations and resource centers.
Los Angeles Green Business Ambassador Program

Shuttered Venue Operators Grant
The Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program was established by the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits, and Venues Act, and amended by the American Rescue Plan Act. The program includes over $16 billion in grants to shuttered venues, to be administered by SBA’s Office of Disaster Assistance. Application opened Thursday, April 8, 2021. Eligible applicants may qualify for grants equal to 45% of their gross earned revenue, with the maximum amount available for a single grant award of $10 million. $2 billion is reserved for eligible applications with up to 50 full-time employees. - Live venue operators or promoters
- Theatrical producers
- Live performing arts organization operators
- Relevant museum operators, zoos and aquariums who meet specific criteria
- Motion picture theater operators
- Talent representatives
Other requirements of note:
- Each business entity owned by an eligible entity that also meets the eligibility requirements
- Must have been in operation as of February 29, 2020
- Venue or promoter who received a PPP loan on or after December 27, 2020, will have the SVOG reduced by the PPP loan amount.
